In 2008, Cook County enacted a 1% sales tax increase, which subjected Cook County residents to one of the highest tax burdens in the country. Toni advocates a roll-back of this sales tax increase for the following reasons:

  • The sales tax increase is a regressive tax that disproportionately affects county's most underprivileged residents.
  • Lowering the sales tax will encourage spending and stimulate commerce countywide.
  • Removing the sales tax increase will force Cook County government to implement responsible spending practices, an action that the county has ignored for too long.

As Cook County Board President, Toni will move to decrease the sales tax in conjunction with implementing prudent fiscal policies, such as cutting wasteful spending and eliminating inefficient programs.
